How to Prepare Your Home for a Remodeling Project

A short prep list that makes the first day of work go smoothly.

Clear the work zone

Empty cabinets, closets and shelves in the area being worked on, and move anything fragile or irreplaceable to another room. Crews protect what's there, but the safest item is the one that isn't in the room.

Take photos of the space before work begins. It's useful for your own records and fun to compare later.

Plan for daily life

If a kitchen or bathroom is out of service, set up a temporary alternative before day one rather than improvising on the fly.

Think about pets, too. Doors get propped open and tools get set down; a quiet room with the door closed is usually best.

Agree on the small logistics

Where should materials be staged? Which entrance should the crew use? What hours work for your household?

Sorting this out in advance prevents most of the friction that comes up during a project.
